I hate stuff like this

Home births under scrutiny. The title on my RSS feed said "Home births 'riskier than hospitals'. Headline with scare tactics. But the article goes on to say that the risk of death in a home birth 'was still low, at 0.2%.' GAH.

I don't even know why I read the news anymore.

I hear you.

DON'T!

Remember your tips for a happy life - I added "don't read/watch the news".

It's fear mongering, alarmist, and adds nothing to your life.

WORD. Give me the Economist, or give me radio silence!

That's funny. I often feel the same way about the Economist (and I certainly feel that way about Paul Krugman). Reading them can be the ultimate shot in the arm for low blood pressure ;-)

So now's not the time to be sharing this link (http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/rosiemurraywest/100045589/the-politics-of-childbirth-is-all-damn-guilt-and-statistics/) with you?

[identity profile] ewigweibliche.livejournal.com 2010-07-01 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I so don't need an article to tell me that! It is SO true. Naturally, I have some opinions on that! Hmmmm would make a good next post....

Yesterday while waiting for my ultrasound, I picked up a copy of Newsweek. A random factoid casually mentioned at the bottom of the page:

"Death results from childbirth every nine minutes."

That was it. WHERE?! In the USA? Worldwide? Death results in childbirth FROM WHAT? It is SUCH a scare tactic. Because you know if somebody hasn't already died from childbirth in the nine minutes I'm in labor, you just KNOW it's gonna be me. :P

Yup. I think I shall write that post.

That is great.

A frustrating read particularly given the context of the article, i.e. related to the UK situation. Surely it is highly questionable how applicable the data from an international study can be in relation to an individual country. The comments from the college of obs and gynae are worrying. They will always seek to cling to evidence that strengthens the medical hold over birth and women's bodies.

[identity profile] ewigweibliche.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
That is very much what I thought.

If I'm not mistaken, something a great many of these studies fail to consider is that women who choose homebirth often choose it whether or not their fetus is healthy, and I think they're also more likely to continue the pregnancy regardless of the outcome. I don't have a source on that though.

Hm, I'd love to hear more about that. I think I know what you're trying to say.
