Ewigweibliche
Mar. 15th, 2007 01:59 pmSome of you know how I came upon this name, some of you may be wondering how I came to such an obscure German name. Here's the history lesson, followed with an amusing modern day addendum.
About 10 years ago, as I was winding down my undergrad years and its privileges, like email accounts (we had some muppet system from the University of Washington- ah the early days of the internet!), my then-husband suggested I get a free and convenient hotmail account. Sitting around the living room one night I was trying to come up with a name that wouldn't involve being the 443rd of something (BigDogg42, Magan312, etc). I wanted something original and something that wouldn't get spammed a lot. So I reached out to my trusty 9th New Collegiate edition of Webster's Dictionary, flipped to the foreign words section and settled on Ewigweibliche. German is cool, the word sounds neat, it's appropriately obscure and means the Eternal Feminine. Perfect!
Fast forward 8 or so years. After using ewigweibliche for various handles, including this here wee blog-type thing, I decided that it was time to get a more professional email address. I decided to use my full given name for a gmail account.
Fast forward to this past Monday.
hrafntinna tried to IM me on gmail. She inadvertently used ewigweibliche instead of my name and got somebody, an English speaker. Not me. Who could be so cool as to use Ewigweibliche? Being the complete dork that I am, I decided to email this person and find out how they came to use this fine name. Turns out she's around 22(?) and wanted an interesting name for her gmail account, so she grabbed her Webster's dictionary, flipped to the foreign words section and came across the name. It's like I have a doppelganger!
Except for the fact that she lives in Trinidad.
The internet is such a cool (and silly and scary) invention.
