I'm in the mood for new music. As I'm putting all my music back on to my laptop (hello tedious!) I realize I haven't listened to music for ages. 2008 was characterized by being pregnant - I didn't read much or listen to music.

So help me out! Please give me two recommendations: 1) A favorite new artist/song/album from the last 6 months and 2) a favorite in general. Any genre, serious or silly. My only off limits for this is screaming. I don't like screaming, no matter how good the rest of the music is.

Thanks!

1)Hmm, the first part is going to be difficult, no TV, no radio reception and no social life to speak of, I haven't heard a great deal of new music in the last six months, so you're going to have to put up with music that is new to me from the last six months.
As such, I'm going to have to be very sad and list my first one as "This is Gallifrey-Our Childhood, Our Home:- Dr.Who, Season 3 soundtrack composed by Murray Gold and conducted by Ben Foster." YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=idQRiLZukG0)

2)Favourite song *rolls D20* "Put it out for good:- Sarah Bettens" (lead singer for K's Choice)

Jethro Tull! Always reminds me of a certain Icelandic scholar I know. I'm not such a fan of Kimya Dawson or Weezer, but I'll check out all the rest! Thank you!

I thoroughly recommend the shine album. It's got a very 'Almost Happy/Coccoon Crash feel to it in that there's that childlike, innocent, world around you, developing experience theme running through it, along the lines of Breakfast, Believe, without the darkness of Shadowman or attitude of Not an addict

Last 6 months, Sara Bareilles. She actually does a duet with Ingrid Michaelson (who [livejournal.com profile] thekitchenvixen suggested and also who I went to school with, called Winter Song that my girls love). And Adele. And the Alison Krauss/Robert Plant cd. OMG so good.

All time, Counting Crows, Kris Delmhorst, Kathleen Edwards.

You and Adam would get along famously! Although we weren't blown away by the Krauss/Plant album. But he Looooooves Counting Crows.

I don't know what it is about the cd, I just love it so. It's so mellow and ahhhhhhhh.

Counting Crows, I'm pretty sure they're the only band that I think can actually do no wrong. Except for remaking Big Yellow Taxi, that was no good.

i'm trying to get more new music too, but i haven't been that successful.

although probably one of my favorite cd purchases of recent times was the soundtrack to i'm not there (http://www.amazon.com/Im-Not-There-Original-Soundtrack/dp/B000VS6P9Q/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1234382061&sr=8-1), the bob dylan movie. it's AWESOME. two cds worth of really interesting interpretations of bob dylan songs. jim james and calexico do a version of "i'm going to acapulco" that kills me every time i hear it.

i also just ordered a cd of washington phillips (http://www.amazon.com/Key-Kingdom-Washington-Phillips/dp/B0006TRO54/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1234382174&sr=1-1). i heard his stuff on the "goodbye babylon" cd set. he's old time gospel but has this crazy soulful voice and plays some sort of crazy instrument that he may, or may not, have build himself.

ZOMG... I have a ton.

If you want me to upload them, let me know and I'll do it when I can.

I don't necessarily have anything "new" because I listen to new stuff all the time, but I'll share my favorites of the moment.

best kids' song for grownups- "Mah Na Mah Na" by Cake
best indie cover- "Bridges & Balloons" by The Decemberists (originally by Joanna Newsom)
best song to yell out while driving- "O New England" by The Decemberists or "In My Place" by Coldplay (especially the live acoustic version, which UGH I don't have)
best song to get naked to- "The Panties" by Mos Def
best remix- a tie between Eminem/Shaggy "Eye of the Tiger" and Chemical Brothers/Velvet Underground/Sugababes/U2 "Don't Hold Back Sweet Jane"
best angsty song- "Running Up That Hill" by Placebo (Kate Bush did the original)
best cutesy love song- "The Way I Am" by Ingrid Michaelson
best ska song- "Keasby Nights" by Catch-22
best feel-good song- "Make Your Own Kind of Music" by the awesome Mama Cass

favorite song of the moment... god, there are many. I really like "1, 2, 3, 4" by The Plain White T's.

And I just heard this song the other day- "Ghost of a Corporate Future" by Regina Spektor- I don't have the mp3 of it but here's a youtube video-

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Boston Red Sox, so Bronson Arroyo's cover of "Dirty Water" kicks ass because it's the 2004 World Series version. :D

Also...
"Sunday Mornings Demo" by Maroon 5
"Peach Plum Pear" and "Crab Clam Cockle Cowrie" by Joanna Newsom
"God Only Knows" by Mandy Moore & Michael Stipe (from REM)
"This Mess We're In" by P.J. Harvey & Thom Yorke (from Radiohead)
"David Duchovny" by Bree Sharp
"Tech Romance" by Her Space Holiday
"Come On Eileen" by Save Ferris

Ugh, I have too much freaking music.

No idea about new stuff, really, as I don't keep track of what's new except from my favorite artists, who are so off the beaten path it's not even funny.

I can tell you what I'm listening to lately, though!

- The Hives, mostly The Black and White Album and Tyrannosaurus Hives (punk, lots of fun. Might be too screamy for you, it occurs to me. Check here (http://www.amazon.com/Black-White-Album-Hives/dp/B000WCBMA8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1234385924&sr=8-1) and here (http://www.amazon.com/Tyrannosaurus-Hives/dp/B0002IQ1PS/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1234385924&sr=8-3) for previews of the tracks)
- MC Lars & ytcracker's The Digital Gangster LP (nerdcore hiphop. My fave track on it is called "Do The Bruce Campbell", which you can get for free here (http://www.mclars.com/audio.html), along with a bunch of other great music by MC Lars. "Download this Song" is one of his best-known and most-upbeat tracks, and it's there too.)

If you're into geeky music at all, check out Hipster, Please (http://www.hipsterplease.com/), which puts out a music podcast fairly regularly.

new[er] stuff:
ceu - seft-titled album
jenny lewis - acid tongue
isobel campbell & mark lanegan - sunday at devil dirt
the tallest man on earth - shallow grave*

*do you like dylan? like dylan, he can't really sing and yet the songs are amazing.

general:
the national - sad songs for dirty lovers
nina simone
don cherry - eternal rhythm* [free-style jazz. CRAZY!]
maria callas - i'm currently obsessed with her greatest double disc. *swoon*
josephine foster - ein wolf im schafspelz*

really, anything by josephine foster, but i think this album in particular might appeal to you. i'm not sure why i think this... perhaps because of your user-name being german? it's interpretations of 19th century german songs - brahms, shubert, etc,. she sings in extreme vibrato and, imho, the end result is incredible.

i can upload any/all of these for you, if you'd like.

Final Fantasy - He Poos Clouds album is better than his other, which still isn't bad or anything. (one (http://www.mungermack.com/music/share/Final%20Fantasy%20-%20Many%20Lives%20-%2049%20MP.mp3), two (http://www.mungermack.com/music/share/Final%20Fantasy%20-%20This%20Lamb%20Sells%20Condos.mp3), three (http://www.mungermack.com/music/share/Final%20Fantasy%20-%20Flare%20Gun.mp3))

Guster - especially the Keep It Together album, and Lost and Gone Forever if that works for you.

Guster! I've seen them in concert twice. The first time was when they opened for John Mayer, like 10 years ago. That was an excellent concert.

And thank goodness they went before Mayer. I had to leave after a few of his songs because of the screaming teenyboppers.

You probably read on FB my latest fav is Vagabond Opera - extreme fun - especially with their female vocalist, who isn't a solid fixture yet.

I also came across Planet Sleeps - good mellow stuff to enjoy with the kid.

THANKS for posting this! I need tunes too.

You were there? It was, wow, so not 10 years ago, now that I'm thinking about it. Maybe in 2001? You missed a great show. It cemented my love for John Mayer (as much as I think he's kind of all up on himself and dates women who aren't smarter than he is). But I also had this weird experience at that show. I was 27, with my girlfriend and as JM was rocking out in all his supremely dorky glory I realized "I dated this guy in high school." I got this glimpse into what a raging dork John must've been in HS - he reminded me SO MUCH of the (far less attractive) band dork I dated and all these cheesey sorority girls wouldn't have dated or even looked twice at. And now they're screaming "John I love you!!" while their frat boy dates look on bored.

It was WEIRD.

That sounds like a much older crowd than the 14 year olds who filled the place with their shrieks at our venue. I just couldn't take it and left four songs in, even though I thought his set was fine.
