I don't think this has anything to do with gender - the kid wants to be like his mama. Right now, you are who he is attached to and you are his love. Who can blame him?
I don't love that you asked him this question and I don't hate that you asked him this question. I just don't see it as relevent yet. Heh...and it's not my place to love or hate it. We parents get so hung up in our own personal identities and trying to Do It Right so we don't Fuck Them Up that we usually end up doing exactly what we didn't want to do. Which is pushing our life agenda onto our kids. We all make our kids into our own, private social experiments.
This sounds like I'm being an ass, or critical, or judging - I'm not. Just saying that no matter what you do, the kid is still going to go to therapy and blame his mother. ;) If it isn't because you were a close-minded bitch it will be because you embarrassed or confused him with your wacked out ideas.
