Alaska - Day 3
Jul. 16th, 2006 04:41 pmEveryone I see at the Silverbow using the free wireless has a mac. Rainbow foods has kombucha. The kid in the corner is talking too much. You can still smoke in bars here. Yech. Each night out makes me feel like I'm coming down with a cold the next morning. I don't ever want to be single in Juneau. Oh my god, that kid is rambling on and on about Juneau to some girl and I'm kicking myself for not bringing my ipod.
Last night I went to the Jump show. It was fun, although pretty uninspiring. Afterwards, I went to the very nice and new Island Pub to hear
Today I went for a hike up Mt. Roberts. It was muddy and damp. Once I got above the tree line I wandered in and out of the clouds. I saw many marmot among the rocks and a large grouse guarding a rocky outcropping while the babies wandered around. Thanks to the tram there are lots of tourists stomping around, one of whom was smoking while walking on the trail. When he was done, he tossed his butt on the trail and went on his merry way. I should be grateful the area has remained as pristine as it has. Another great tourist moment: a boy wondered what was on the rocks and his mother said that acid rain was eating away the rocks. We don't have acid rain here! It's lichen growing on the rocks, a natural phenomenon in alpine meadow. At first I wanted to mock her stupidity, but then I thought that maybe she actually lives somewhere where acid rain is a reality. I can't be too holier-than-them. When I got above the tree line my cell phone rang. A very surreal moment for me. Geez, you'd think I was from California or something.
