Oct. 10th, 2006 10:24 amMy little laptop is still sickly. I need to reinstall the software. I think that'll do it. I need to get it fixed because I hate only being able to email or post at work. I feel rather unprofessional about it. Plus, when things happen, like the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in Golden Gate Park I'd rather write about that day, not two days later. The festival is AMAZING. Free, gorgeous location, wonderful people watching, great music. And ganja cookies. As diverse economically and age wise and stylewise (young hippies, aging 60s burnouts, queer punks, trendsters, families, etc etc), basically everyone was white. On stage or in the audience. I think that's interesting.
But the music. I saw: Alison Moorer, great voice, boring songs. The Stairwell Sisters, so fun! They have a clogger! Some other all male San Francisco clogging group. Again with the fun. Earl Scruggs and his son and band. That man can play banjo, yes indeed. Finally, Gillian Welch and that guy who's name I can't remember that does all the duets with her. They were the best. Gillian's music is nice, but I'm not a huge fan. I saw her here three years ago and she was okay. This weekend she was really really good. There were tens of thousands of people, all well behaved, sitting in the grass to hear her.
One other bonus of the day was meeting a nice woman, very cute too. I was wearing my "Alaska grown" sweatshirt, sitting with the Retro Redhead and this cute woman plops down in front of me and asks if I'm from Alaska. So we get to talking and she's from Chugiak (never been there, but still!). She moved to the Bay Area for the art. Even better, she lives in my neighborhood! So, I invited her to Feast Bay, the arts group/salon that was happening that night. And she came. She's a muralist, going to do this huge mural representing Central and South America for the city of Oakland. Sweet.
In unrelated news, I left the house with out my shirt. I could wear the sweaty ugly tshirt I biked to work in, but ew. So I am in my camisole, wrapped in my sweater, waiting for Adam to bring me my blouse.

Date: 2006-10-10 11:07 pm (UTC)1. Love Little Sparrow
2. Wicked jealous of your bluegrass festival!!! We used to have a local bluegrass thingie called the Hayseed Festival that took place essentially in a field across the street from my house; but I was too young and stupid to appreciate how totally awesome it was.
3. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. I'm a huge Gillian fan.
4. Earl Scruggs!
5. I love that you made a new friend, like a real one. In a neat way. And she's a muralist!
6. I think you should see the film Songcatcher ASAP if you have not already. And then I think you might wish to purchase the soundtrack. Just trust me on this one.
Lordy lordy, you are so neat.
Well, gosh.
Date: 2006-10-10 11:59 pm (UTC)Firstly, I love lists too. Actually, it's probably a neurosis. I also get paid to organize and at times the list making can get a little out of hand.
Secondly, thank you for reminding me of David Rawlings name. He was just fantastic. AND - he sang with Gillian and Emmylou Harris on an a capella song. So great. Yeah, come on out to the Bay Area next October. Did I mention the festival is FREE?
Lastly, I think you're cool too! Especially after that luscious farmers market post. I can never get myself to the farmers market for various reasons, most of them involving laziness. But I get a CSA box delivered every two weeks so I can learn more about what's in season when.
Ps, I hope the little Alaskan girl will be my friend. We'll see if she comes back to Feast Bay! I hope we didn't bore her or scare her away.

Date: 2006-10-11 05:40 pm (UTC)words you like
Date: 2006-10-11 10:31 pm (UTC)You seem to like queue - yes, it has a nice shape in the mouth.
I love the word 'subtle'.
But I don't like the word 'flaccid'.
I have been known to create a list of work to do, and then find myself doing something that wasn't on that list. I then proceed to write the previously un-listed agenda item ON the aforementioned list, just so I can have the pleasure of crossing it out.
Oh how sad are we.
