Christmas in November

Before I forget one more day (but who can blame me with The Conference fast approaching?), when Adam's parents came for Thanksgiving they brought presents. I guess they couldn't wait. We're not going down to San Diego area (where they live) for Christmas proper, but we are going down for new year's weekend. Anyway, among the usual suspects like wine magazines and rhyming dictionaries, there were a couple of genuine gems. Adam's dad found me wooden "bear paw" salad tongs with ALASKA carved in the back. He also found a slightly dingy copy of Outhouses of Alaska, a staple in the bookstore I used to work at in Juneau. I found this to be very funny since I bought a copy for
fictional_emily when I was home this summer. 'Cuz she loooooves bathroom humor. Just loves it.
The piece de resistance (some day I'll learn how to type accents and such) was a PINEAPPLE LAMP. Why should such a shiny object fascinate me so much and be the cause for such excitement, you ask? Let me begin by saying that my first pineapple lamp was one of the best gifts I ever received. A former lover's mother had one and I thought it was just fantastic. Her house was crammed with kitschy odds-n-ends and I used to joke that one night I was going to sneak in and steal it and she'd probably not notice for weeks. Unbeknownst to me, she spent six months on ebay trying to track another one down. Now that's dedication. So, years later, a move or two between states, you can understand my fury when adorable but desperately uncoordinated new cat (Nigel) attempts to jump to the ledge on which my pineapple lamp is perched and thoroughly shatters the lamp on the cool tile floor. I have been pineapple lamp-less for over a year now.
But no more! A new set of in-laws (out-laws, legal or no, whatever) has purchased me my beloved pineapple lamp. However, I keep forgetting about it because it's still in the box. The apartment still hasn't been fully picked up from last week's holiday.
