So I got that gin n tonic and then some
Jul. 8th, 2008 08:23 amYesterday was my and Adam's first wedding anniversary. Unbeknownst to me Adam had arranged for a friend to come watch Benn for a couple of hours so we could go out to dinner. He took me to our favorite place, Wood Tavern. There's always a wait - and that's if you can even get in. We decided to sit at the bar. I had my gin n tonic and Adam and I ordered a glass of wine with our food (I ordered the heirloom tomato salad and the sea food stew, Adam had lamb and barley soup with the roasted duck). As we're waiting for our firsts to arrive Adam notices the man next to him has a bunch of wine bottles on the counter. Adam asks to look at the bottle of cabernet sauvignon. I notice that it's not on the wine list. The gentleman tells Adam to have a glass. It was exquisite. We proceed to chat with this jovial and generous man. He loves wine. He is a major investor in two small wineries. He's in construction. He's half German Jew, half (Baptist) Japanese, but has a Jesuit education. We talk religion, backgrounds, wine.... He shares more wine, this time French stuff. I know nothing at all about French wine. The man tells us a great joke. Asks for our card so he can send us some wine. Adam notices that he gets a text on his blackberry that begins "The governor called."
To top is off, the restaurant didn't charge us for our drinks and put a candle in our dessert (the waiter heard that it was our anniversary)! What a great night!
We get home from an amazing meal and decide to google this man. Turns out he has organized some high profile private fundraisers for Bill Clinton. And that the cabernet we shared was $350 a bottle.
