Our party last night was a success. Of course, winning helps. There was much good food and drink and many people left things here. I have unopened bottles of champagne, prosecco, red wine, and a barely broken into bottle of Glenlivet 18. Come over and help me drink?
Bennett was amazing, but had a very difficult time going to sleep. So many people to hold him! So much cheering!
My thoughts on the aftermath:
I was so moved by Obama's acceptance speech. We had some tears in the house. If you can make a poet cry (an honest to god working published poet) then you know you're doing something right! I think Obama's humility and resolve are beautiful.
In the California arena, I am just mystified by voters here.
Obama won by a lot, but Prop 8 -making the constitution define marriage as between a man and a woman- is in a strong lead. This makes sense as the black community general is against homosexuality. BUT, Prop 4 -parental notification for women under 18 seeking abortion- looks like it's going to fail. WTF? Weird.
In Alaska, I am stunned that convicted felon Senator Stevens and indicted Congressman Young look set to win. Stevens and his opponent are at 50 and 49 percents, respectively, but still. A felon should not be in a close race! As Adam said this morning, Alaskans know what side their bread is buttered on.
(Side note: my mother in law responded to my "no on Prop 8" letter with a beautiful letter of her own. She didn't say she had voted against it, but it sounded that way. Even if she didn't vote no, it was a winning moment for our relationship and therefore completely worth the effort.)
