If this is what being conservative means, I might sign up. This article amuses me. Who knew I'd enjoy reading the Weekly Standard?

Which part would you be signing up for?

I just liked a lot of the stuff about personal responsibility, stopping the abortion debate, fiscal conservancy, getting rid of No Child Left Behind, etc. Oh yeah, and the sense of humor.

Except this part is kind of annoying: "We've had nearly three decades to educate the electorate about freedom, responsibility, and the evils of collectivism". See, we just need to be "educated" and then of course we'll agree with everything they say. I didn't realize that we hadn't already had their propaganda shoved down our throat for the past 30 years...

It seemed to me like the author was characterizing everything including mom and apple pie as "conservative." And no one with kids is a liberal? Um. Hi.

yes...that is much closer to Conservative ideals than the stupid crap you see people bitching about.

Smaller government means smaller government (which includes getting the fuck out of our private lives)

Gee....you're going to get disowned from your friends if you say stuff like that. *grin* Now repeat after me... "Conservatives are evil"

There...now they will love you again. *laughs*

That's become more what libertarian means nowadays. I feel like the term "conservative" has been co-opted by the Ingrahams, Liddys, and Hannitys of the world.

The war in Iraq isn't "conservative," either, but most of the people who were originally against it were liberals.

Oh of course. And there's that line that about educated people choosing conservatism and only the insane choosing to be liberal. It's still propaganda. I'm not saying I agree with every sentence...

>And no one with kids is a liberal?

By that logic, Obama himself is a conservative. If that's the case, what's this guy complaining about?

P. J. is funny -- that's a fact -- but he's talking about Conservatism the way people used to talk about Christianity, as in, "that's mighty Christian of you." I'm all for personal responsibility too, as long as that isn't a code word for abolishing the safety net and despising the poor. It's that kind of code language that makes it impossible to have a real conversation in this country.
