Culling

Adam and I just culled at least 25% of our books. It was easy. We've always struggled with what to keep, what to get rid of; we've been very stingy. We really must be ready to leave because it was just bam, zap, pow. Comic books, fiction, poetry, women's history, loads of poker books...

(I won't pay for shipping or type them all out, but if you're a real book hoarder I can email you my phone number and we can go through them and if you pay for shipping, I'll totally give them to you!)

My goal now is to work through the books I haven't read that I decided to keep. Hardcovers first, then paperbacks. We are planning to do another cull closer to when we move. Whenever that is.

I could use some books! Maybe not poker books, but everything else sounds good.

You know, I should just come down to Oakland sometime soon without anything else on my plate and just hang out...once you're in Wales, it's going to be so much harder to visit you! (Although it will give me an excellent excuse to finally make that trip to the British Isles...)

Oh! Books off the top of my head that you might want: the last three Earth Sea books, Amanda Marcotte's little book on feminism (I'm just not going to read it). If you want them they're yours!

I don't care for Marcotte, but I'm all about the Earthsea. Yay!

Yeah, I don't care for Marcotte either. She's got a bitterness there that is unpalatable. But you now own Tales from Easrthsea, Tehanu and The Other Wind.

That is awesome. And I'm glad you didn't list the titles, because I totally don't need more books. My bookshelves are overstuffed as it is.

I've been a book hoarder from way back. Just can't ever part with them! But Adam and I think that the ease with which we were able to cull reveals a lot about how ready we are for change.

Good for you! I have to do something similar...I did so a few years ago, and I haven't bought a lot of books since, but I feel like I don't need all these books I don't look at.

Poker books! Yours, Adam's or both? We've got our own shelf full of them.

I used to find it quite difficult to part with books, even ones that I didn't really enjoy. I'm not sure what changed, but now I can get rid of them quite easily, and I only keep the ones I really love.

Adam's. I don't play cards. I learn the rules and then forget them. I just can't really get into card games.

I worked at independent bookstores for a number of years so I have a whole host of books I got intending to read and never have. Yeah, it's difficult to give up books. But I seem to move a lot and they are so heavy. The piano will also be sold I've decided. I never thought I'd give it up! Clearly this move is meant to happen.

they are hard to move... we moved them a bit and thankfully dont have to move them anytime soon at all but they were hard to move..

we have a library in our house with books that we each have had for over 30 or 40 years... books are like air to me.

the piano too? we wouldnt get rid of ours either.. lol...we actually have two of them but refuse to get rid of stuff.

we are also packrats. can you tell?

I am not a packrat. I hate clutter. Books don't count as clutter if they're on a shelf! All of this culling just feels right. Of course, all this free space on the shelves probably means that we'll just get some new books!

The piano. That's a hard one. My mother shipped it to me from Alaska. It was the piano we got when I was 5 and I still remember the day it was delivered! But I don't really play piano and I'm not singing much these days, so it's getting no love. Why stick it in storage for several years to moulder? We're certainly not paying to move it to Wales. Sigh.

i'm really glad you're not listing titles because i know we don't need more books. before we moved, we cleared out about 60 books and threw out a huge bookshelf. when we were unpacking i thought we'd be able to get away with one less bookshelf -- yea right. we had to buy a replica of the one we threw out.

what did i miss? where are you moving too?

Oh it's not certain. Well, we *do* need to move, eventually. But Adam and I have a bee in our bonnet to move to Wales in August. I'm technically enrolled in a PhD program at the Univ of Wales. It's a dissertation, so technically I can do it anywhere, but we've decided to move there - for a bunch of reasons. However, it's not certain yet. I have yet to hear back from my adviser, we have no idea about visas or costs or whatnot yet. But....that's the plan.
