Is this teething?
Bennett is *writhing* in pain. Screaming, grunting, crying so hard he sometimes is choking on his own spit.
It's a been a rough week. Irritability. Off and on discomfort. Some drool (normally he doesn't drool at all.) He's hitting his head and yanking on his ears. He has no fever. He had his well baby check up (no shots) and the doctor peeked in his ears and they were fine. Bennett is exhausted. His sleeping has been crappy. He slept for two hours, woke for an hour and a half - started out fussy, went to playful, turned to screaming. Fell asleep after tylenol, orajel and nursing. And after an hour he's up again. Adam's got him, walking him around the room.
Is teething really this awful? Or is this something else?

Date: 2009-03-27 07:23 am (UTC)To make it confusing, Ninja has started writhing and crying so hard he can't breathe/chokes on his own spit/etc just when he is a little bit upset lately. He did it for long periods last night when we tried to put him to sleep (so nothing was wrong other than he didn't want to sleep). It's like he goes from calm to hysterical without the intermediate stages now.
So B could just be cranky about something, if the fact ninja is doing it too means that ridiculous crying thing is a stage.

It can be, absolutely & it can be scary for the parents. But to be on the safe side, if the symptoms don't lessen very soon, I'd get him checked out.

Date: 2009-03-27 11:22 am (UTC)You might want to try Hyland's teething tablets. Also, some weak chamomile tea in bottle/dropper form, whatever B will take, can sometimes help. DON'T SWEETEN IT, obviously. He might want to nurse constantly which is fairly normal.
If it's just gas, no teething, have you altered your diet in any way? Had anything new? He might have a reaction to that.
If you're still supplementing with formula- any changes in that?
Feel around his gums if he'll let you. ♥

Date: 2009-03-27 11:39 am (UTC)Teething for Sam involved a huge amount of drool and gnawing on stuff. Whatever it is, it sounds awful--so sorry for all of you! :(
Btw, if he's older than 6 months now, you can use ibuprofen, and it's a better pain reliever than Tylenol (according to our pediatrician). That's worth a shot too.

Date: 2009-03-27 08:09 pm (UTC)J goes through a lot of pain when he gets teeth... his top two teeth were the worst... molars were bad too. grabbing at his ears, drooling, general crabbiness... it was awful.
Id call your doctor if he still is grabbing his ears over the weekend... and keep checking for a fever.
we had more success with baby motrin than tylenol...
