Time for a rum cake
Jun. 6th, 2004 04:16 pmI am home. And today is a gorgeous southeast Alaskan day. But even the grey of yesterday couldn't dampen the vibrant green that pulsates everywhere around here. The mossy moist old-growth forrests as well as the unkempt tangle of trees and bushes and weeds that grow around my family's house radiate with the lushness that only 300 days of rain a year can bring.
Someday I will write an essay entitled "The Weight of Trees".
The tourists are infesting downtown. Must drive carefully so as not to run down the careless ones. Must temper the bitterness of ALL the new jewelry shops- at least 5 that weren't here last summer. One is even named "Venetian Jewels and (something or other, can't remember, blocked it out)". What does Venice have to do with Alaska? It's really disgusting.
Adam is fitting right in with my family. Well, my dad is not welcoming at all, but that's not unusual. He's being even more distant and uninterested in me and my visit than usual. Ah well. And my friends..... ah, we are snobs about this place, are we not? I am looking foward to the party tonight. However, I am increasingly aware that I fit in less and less here. Not because I can't, but because I just don't live here anymore and probably won't for a long time. But, I don't fit in Berkeley either. It's a very odd feeling to be drifting. It isn't one I like or know how to navigate well.
