Mysterious Welsh wildlife
Dec. 16th, 2009 10:01 pmTonight walking home through the cemetery I saw an unidentified mammal. Yes, it was dark. But there was just enough light from the house next door to show me that it was bigger than a cat, it had a large tail about as long as its body, and it was dark with a thick white stripe from the tip of the head to the end of the tail. I though maybe I'd seen a skunk.... but after googling images of a skunk, clearly that's not what I saw. Nor is it any of the other mammals in Wales. What the hell did I see? It made me stop in my tracks. And when a dog came out of the neighboring house it scampered off.

Date: 2009-12-17 01:13 am (UTC)What made you think it's not a skunk of unusual size? You mention the shape not being right for a dog or cat...what shape was it?
*very intrigued by this mystery*

Date: 2009-12-17 12:09 am (UTC)I ask you the same question I just thought of when responding to Erinya:
Do badgers turn all white in the winter? Even though it hasn't snowed here?

Hmm. Mysterious...

Date: 2009-12-17 10:27 am (UTC)Probably a fox, possibly a badger, maybe a pine marten. The latter are the size of a domestic cat & I've seen several (although the stripe is odd ~ ditto badger.)
In a tricky light, it's hard to tell. My money's on a fox.
