IUDs can and do fail. The Pill fails. ALL birth control short of abstinence fails. When you have a million couples relying on something like an IUD, which has about a 0.4% failure rate, you're actually talking about 4,000 accidental pregnancies. Do those 4,000 couples deserve 2% pity? When it happens to you, it happens 100%.
