Last night a large building in my home town burned down. I got emails and read the paper on-line. Saw some photos of the smoke. Made me miss my home again, though not in the same heart-wrenching way I have in the past. I missed the community, the familar names of columnists and fire chiefs, initmate knowledge of streets and corners. I love that it was the Subway that burned down. Juneau never had done well with chains. All we need are for the Columbian Emeralds, Little Switzerlands, and the McDonald's to go and downtown will home free....

It's beautiful here today, a truly spectacular Berkeley day. I *finally* went to Berkeley Bowl, 12 months after moving here. What an amazing store. It's what WholeFoods could be if it were local, bigger, carried everything, and was cheaper. It was also very overwhelming. There must be fifteen checkout counters all backed up into the aisles. It's HUGE.

I also found out that my new roommate will be here next Monday. I know her name, she's coming from North Carolina, and she's an MDiv student (a ministry degree, high chances that she wants to be a pastor). Please be cool please be cool please be cool.

I'm taking off soon for wine and cheese and philosophy. The Dominican School is hosting a professor who will be talking on justice and morality. Did I mention there will be good wine and expensive cheese there?
