Feminism: totally relevant. Theology: can be totally relevant. Christianity: certain parts and strains of it can be very relevant. But a lot of times, when I look through the journal articles out there and the books that get published, I just shake my head and think "What the hell does this have to do with anything? Who cares anymore?" Do we really need yet another Protestant take on the Gospel of Matthew? I'm going to say no. I think for my own motivation I need to figure out a way to make my own arcane studies relevant to the greater world or risk boring myself with inanity.

I was just talking about theology and relevance last night, because I am trying to find feminist/liberation theologies of childbirth to round out a proposal for a course on Paganism and the childbearing year that I'd like to teach through Cherry Hill. I found this (http://www.religion-online.org/showarticle.asp?title=1271) and this (http://books.google.com/books?id=4e2XRkQskDoC&printsec=frontcover&dq=mother+with+child&hl=en&ei=W-QtTLjgBYL6lwf87LThCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CC4Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false) but I've gotta believe there's a lot more out there and I'm just looking in the wrong places. Do you have any ideas?

Birthing Within?

I don't know, actually. I don't think there is much in this area. But I've never looked before. I know my personally theology was rocked by being pregnant and giving birth!

I know there are plenty of articles and stuff on Mary's virginity and birth - but that will likely be too arcane and Christian for your class. Although, Jane Schaberg wrote a book about Jesus being illegimate, the result of rape, and this idea got her hate mail and her car fire bombed.

Yeah, I'm working with material from Birthing From Within.

I know my personally theology was rocked by being pregnant and giving birth!

I had assumed this would be true for many people and was surprised not to find oodles of work. But maybe I still have the wrong search terms?

That Jane Schaberg story sounds crazy.

I think theology has finally gone to complete irrelevance for me. I feel like I need an absolutely new paradigm, and I have no idea how to break through. There's nothing for it but to go one day at a time, so that's what I do.

"Onwards and sideways" to borrow from Carol.
