Normally famous people don't get me all excited. I have met a few "famous" people, mostly working at Bailey/Coy Books - fantastic bookstore in Seattle - authors mainly. I carded Peter Buck once. Followed Rufus Wainwright into a used CD store and talked about Canada for 15 minutes. However, today Tracy Chapman came into my little bookstore.
At first I wondered if it was her. She's been off the radar for a while. Last time I saw her was at the very first Lilith Fair.... whenever that was in the '90s, and it was at the Gorge, so there was a big distance between us. But today, this striking, compact, shiny, gorgeous black woman with dreads came in. Looked distinctly like a lesbian, but in the best possible way. She had a still commanding presence about her. Her... partner?... came in. They smooched. They bought books. My suspicion was confirmed when her credit card said Tracy Chapman. I wanted to gush right there about how highly I thought of her and her music, but instead, said "Are you visiting? Or do you have a show?" She smiled, shyly perhaps. Her friend/partner said with a grin, "No, she lives here."
Wow. Tracy Chapman lives in Berkeley. So cool.
