Apr. 25th, 2006 01:37 pmI just read an article about a new organization called Faith In America. It's founded by an Southern Baptist who had an epiphany that hating gays was not Christ-like. So he teamed up with a financial backer and has started a series of print ads that aim to get Christians to think about faith-based bigotry. I think this is fantastic. Evangelical and conservative Christians are not going to listen to non-religious/non-Christians tell them what's right and wrong, so renewal has to come from within. I am pleased that someone has the guts to create and publish these startling ads.
Sometimes I miss being more involved in the Christian world. There really can be wonderful examples of people making the world a better place and being in touch with something transcendent. Sometimes I'm grateful I'm not more involved - it can be so disheartening at times, especially under our current presidential administration. I have to remind myself that there will always be jack-asses co-opting what is good in the world. Every faith struggles with this - I'm surprised there hasn't been more liberal Christian/Muslim dialogue and teamwork given the state of politics. I suppose there needs to more people co-opting back the good stuff. Some day I'll decided if that's a role I want to take on.
