Starbucks is officially opening next January in Juneau. And Wal-mart. And nearly half the population support a road out. A road to where one might reasonably ask. But still, a longer road for more driving! Just like down south! If everyone wants down south so much with it's infuriating traffic, chain store clusters, and cheap plastic crap, why don't they just move there/here? Must innovation and economic progress suck so much?

I feel like one of those old fogey traditionalists. "In my day, it snowed 6 feet in December and we had three day power outages and online shopping involved the Montgomery Ward catalog. And we had to chop our wood and hike six miles uphill to and from school."

The funny thing is People are sort of concerned about the competition for coffee. I know at 3 bucks a gallon for gas I'm not going to shlep my way down tot fred meyer for fucking coffee. and the people coming from the valley they will have to drive downtown on glacier hwy not egan. No competition...As for the road out that's just fucked up..i mean half now half later? Great an extra twenty five miles to nowhere....

I wonder if our parents felt the same way when the installed Egan highway?

Except Egan meant development in the Valley. Prior to 1975 almost no one lived out there. Now it's got 70% of the population (or something large like that). But where are they going to build in a fjord for god's sake?
