In two weeks Adam, Bennett and I are going to Hardly Strictly Bluegrass at Golden Gate Park. Absolutely free, outdoors, awesome. Even the hundred thousand people don't bother me. However, this year it looks like the organizers stacked Sunday. I recognize nearly everyone on the list. I fear it will be freakishly crowded. But Saturday I recognize nearly no one!

So. Those of you who know a little something about roots music ([livejournal.com profile] donkeyfly, [livejournal.com profile] ginger_root, [livejournal.com profile] automata, I'm thinking of you three specifically), can you please take a look at the schedule and tell me what I should hear on Saturday?

I'd be so grateful!

In other music news, I think I'm going to opera tomorrow night, to see Die Tote Stadt. WHEE!

Oh, I'm bummed you won't be there Friday! Alison Krauss is amazing and her album with Robert Plant is love. Ok! Saturday! You NEED to go see 2:05pm Three Girls & Their Buddy (Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin & Buddy Miller). These women are AMAZING and seeing them all together is not something that should be missed. Ohhh, I'm so jealous! You'll have a great time.

Definitely do not miss Richard Thompson on Saturday (1:30, Star Stage). He's my all time favorite guitar player EVER. Also Steve Earle, Nick Lowe and Emmylou Harris are always good, but that should shock no one.

I usually go for at least one day, but I don't know if I will this year or not. Big crowds freak me out.

Normally I am not a crowd person and I avoid them, but I've found that the trees and wide open fields help me (rather than street fairs where I feel hemmed in by the buildings and concrete). Plus, people tend to be chill, ie stoned. And I've figured out a good system of just stalking out a spot and hanging there all day.

Yeah, once I get there I can handle it, it's more the traffic and/or crowded buses on the way there that scare me. I may still go. Just promise me you'll see Richard Thompson. Here's a sample:

Don't worry, he usually wears a hat now.

Oh DAMN, you're missing MC HAMMER!!!!! That's CRAP!!!!

So, other choices....
On Saturday... (I'm ashamed that I'm not more up on a few of the bands listed, unfortunately)
Dry Branch Fire Squad (I've only heard a few of their tunes, but I liked them)
Richard Thompson (oh yes)
Three Girls & Their Buddy looks AWESOME
The Gourds will be funny and fun and up-tempo
Steve Earle (I've always wanted to see him)

Meanwhile, all of the bands on Sunday are making my HEAD EXPLODE. I'm SO jealous!!!! Did you need Sunday recommendations?

andrew and i have been talking about going to this forever, and we ALWAYS forget until it's too late. i'm VERY jealous.

last spring i had one of the most powerful musical experiences of my life when we went to see dry branch fire squad at rivergrass in portland. GO SEE THEM! they're absolutely amazing. i kid you not when i say that they had everyone in the audience in tears. literally. i cried.

other amazing people on saturday:

the del mcCoury band
- super awesome traditional bluegrass band. the first big time bluegrass band i ever loved.

three girls and their buddy
- all three of these ladies are stellar singers, but i think patty griffin might be one of my all-time favorite song writers.

steve earle & the bluegrass dukes
- rowdy and awesome bluegrassy country

i also really like mark olson, but i don't know what he's been playing lately, he was one of the instigators of alt country.

beyond that, i know there are people on this saturday list that i've heard of, but i would need andrew to remind me of who they actually are.

SO JEALOUS!
