I think one of the reasons is that when we vote in leaders, while the primary individual (Prime Minister, Chancellor, President etc.) is important, the party behind them is even more so. While McCain may seem to have a great deal of relevant experience and does on occasion come across with some charisma, he's still stuck with the Republican party as his backing band, not to mention 'Hockey-Mom' Barbie.
Even if it were Josiah Bartlet in McCain's place, we'd still vote for the Democrat.
