I am totally dragging my feet about getting ready for work.

All I want to do is curl up in my bed and w.h.i.n.e.

The thought of the presidential debates tonight isn't cheering me up. However, [livejournal.com profile] pwilk is bringing over Indian food. I think that might help.

Now I'm annoying myself. Ugh.

Alaskh ho!

Very excited about the debates myself, can't wait!!!
I'm going to look for warm clothes for B today so you don't have to worry. Just take a day off, loaf around, do nothing, and don't feel guilty about it!

lots of love

Oh my goodness, yay!!

First off, there are many many different types of diapers, all styles and prices. it can be overwhelming at first, but you'll get the hang of it. Also, some people go crazy with their washing routines - not necessary, unless you have fancy washing machines and that is easy to do.

Here are some great informational pages:

<a href="http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/basics.htm"</a>
<a href="http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm"</a>

A note on detergents: if I can find the kids listed I grab them, but for now I just use something that is scent and color free. I use something called Bac-Out (available at Whole Foods, it's by BioKleen and you can google the product to find where it's sold). I spray that on my poopy diapers and it does a remarkable job of helping get the poop out.

I have a large hanging pail for regular diapers and a smaller hanging pail for poopy diapers. I never zip them (the air helps keep them less stinky actually) and then I can dump the diapers in the wash and the pails too.

For diapers, there are soooo many choices.
The cheapest is prefolds. Large sqaures of cloth that you fold and pin. Not hard, durable, don't take up a lot of space on butt or in storage. Also, not the cutest and not the best for babysitters.

There are fitteds, which require a cover, AIOs (all in ones) which have a cover on them, and pockets, which don't need a cover either but you stuff. I have some of all three. I like them all, but my favorite are the first two. Mostly for the absorbancy (I just don't find pockets as thick) and for the cute factor. Almost all of these you'll need to get new diapers as Anna grows, but there are some one size diapers that fit babies 10-35 pounds. These are a bit more expensive, but then you only need one set of diapers.

Price upfront can seem expensive, but remember that you won't be purchasing diapers regularly and once you have a functioning stash you'll be set for the next kid/s.

Now for the fun part! Here are some of the sites I buy from:
<a href="http://www.thegoodmama.com/">Goodmama</a> Hands down my favorite so far. Great customer service, beautiful diapers, soft, no blow out has ever leaked, one size, as they loose their silky softness over time they get MORE absorbant.

<a href="http://www.andsuchislife.com/shop/">And Such is Life</a> Also really nice diapers. They are more trim than the GMs, but I like her AIOs. These also dry quickly.

<a href="http://www.sweetiebums.com/products.html">Sweetiebums</a> Also beautiful work. Trim fit.

There are waaaay more diapers out there. These are my favorite.

Now for covers. These you'll have to size up as she grows. With AIOs you won't need a cover, but I have yet to see a one size AIO. I like both PUL and wool.
<a href="http://www.fireflydiapers.com/diapercovers_easywool.htm"</a> I have these covers and find them very effective and soft. This company also makes diapers, which I haven't tried but want to.

<a href="http://www.wigglewormbottoms.com/store/Default.asp"</a> I have several of these covers. You can pick the fabric that goes over the plastic PUL. These are easy and fun.

<a href="http://www.woollybottoms.com/"</a> Wool is awesome and these pants serve as pants AND diaper covers.

I also have a few Imse Vimse PUL covers. These are thin and plain and I like to use them when I don't want extra bulk. Often when I'm using a GM (can be bulky) and B will be riding in the sling on me on the way to work. Or riding in a car seat.

Finally, washing cloth diapers. It might take some getting used to to handle poopy and wet diapers. But remember that even their poop is way more sanitary than much of what we touch during the day. Some people do rinses and multiple washes. I have a coin op machine in my building and it's bare bones, so I can't choose different rinses and what not. Here's what I do:
Fill the machine only half full with diapers, use less than an adult load wash of detergent, wash hot, rinse cold, dry. For poopy diapers, I wash them in with the others, but I either rinse with a hose on cold, or soak for half an hour in cold water, spray with Bac-Out again, and throw in the wash. Sometimes there will be light staining, but leave it in the sun and voila!

I really hope this helps! Good luck. And feel free to ask me as things come up!

I'm trying to digest all the information you just gave me. Seems like a lot but I'm still interested because disposibles are costing us a fortune lately. I'm curious how much the cloth diapers cost you - how many do you go through in a day? how big of a stash do I need if I can wash them frequently & what's the deal with liners? I really like the idea of one size up to toddlerhood & that they can be used for the next baby.

Like I said, it can seem a big outlay of money at the start, but it actually saves money over time. Also, you can phase in gradually! Like, only do cloth during the day, or as you have money for diapers. There are no hard and fast rules.

From 5am til midnight we go through....about 12? Then one over night. We don't use liners, although some people do - and it would work well for poop and keeping the mess low. Most people suggest at least 24 diapers to start. I have more and now go about 2.5 to 3 days between washes.

I don't know how much I've spent (I'm afraid to look...) Confession time: During my baby blues I fell down the cloth diaper rabbit hole. It's really easy to do... There are also some nice cloth diapering communities on LJ.
