Firstly, LJ is being weird so I can't access my friends page. Hurrumph.

We watch a lot of Avatar: the Last Airbender in this house. It's B's favorite thing ever. After mama and papa his next most used words are: Appa (Aang's giant flying bison), Momo (Aang's lemur bat), Aang (the Avatar). I've seen every episode multiple times. Believe it or not, I'm not sick of it. It holds up. I've only noticed one inconsistency (season one, episode 3: Iroh says that his favorite tea is ginseng, but ep 2 and later on it is jasmine). For quite a while I've been thinking that a person could write a little book called 'Everything I Ever Needed to Know I Learned from Avatar.' So I'm going to start it.

Here are your lessons, in order, as I re-watch them with Bennett:
Season One - Water
Ep 1: Running away from your problems and duties only makes them worse.

Ep 2: Sometimes what you're looking for doesn't arrive in the form you expected.

Ep 3: Always remember your basics.
Mercy and compassion look like weakness but are always honorable.

♥ Avatar. I've been rewatching myself recently, just started on Book Two (almost to Toph, hooray!). This is a sweet idea.

Ep 1: Running away from your problems and duties only makes them worse.

Aang has to be one of the most extreme examples of this ever. He ran away for a century, and in the interim there was a genocide. That makes avoiding debts or not dealing with personal issues look like peanuts.

I admit finding a lesson in ep 1 was a stretch!

Do you have a good Zuko icon? Is it weird to have the hots for a 16 yr old cartoon character? But I also love his journey.

Also, I am going to buy Bennett a stuffed Appa for his 2nd birthday. Right now he is sitting next to me pointing at your icon saying Sokka over and over and over.

Actually one of the things I love in episode 1 is Aang and Katara's exchange about penguin sledding: "I haven't done this since I was a kid!" "You still are a kid." Part of what makes Aang such a charming hero is that he relishes his own childhood, and encourages other people to see wonder and fun in the world, which seems to me just as important a part of his job as solving problems and keeping people from fighting.

I don't have a Zuko icon myself, but I've found some lovely Avatar icons at [livejournal.com profile] iconnaissances and [livejournal.com profile] magicker_icons- you can sort through both by their tags. I really love his journey too- it's truly excellent character development. And I kind of have the hots for a thirty year old cartoon character (http://www.roy-mustang.net/pyro/media/manga_novels/roy_manga_novels_009.jpg) so there will be no judging here...

Right now he is sitting next to me pointing at your icon saying Sokka over and over and over.

CUUUTE!!

Oh I'm also loving Full Metal Alchemist! Yes, he's wonderful. I believe you are the reason we're watching Avatar, so I'll take recommendations from you any time!!

Also, is it weird that I love the name Iroh? If Adam and I have another boy Ian is going to be either the first or middle name and I've been thinking that Ian Iroh would be a great name. I think I've just tipped waaaaaaay over into fan girl-dom.

Well, a kid could certainly have far worse namesakes! If I have children they are probably going to end up named after characters from the Hebrew Bible, which is just a slightly more easy to disguise form of fangirling...

And if you're after recommendations I have many- I've spent a lot of my free time over the last few months getting into manga & anime, and I've found some cracking stuff. Are you guys into Studio Ghibli at all? Their films often combine being child-friendly and yet fun and interesting in a very Avatar-esque way (though there's a couple that really aren't for kids).

I love it. I wasn't expecting to. Bennett LOVES IT. He talks about the characters all day long (just mentioning them, but still). I am sure that watching this has influenced his running around pointing things and making explosive sounds, but the limited violence is tempered with such excellent morals and characters that I just don't mind.

If you start watching give it about 5 eps into season one to really settle in. Let me know what you think!

I highly recommend it! I think it's the perfect cartoon for pagan parents too.
