I: Imaginative Reconstruction
In this section I will introduce the reasons for revisiting Mary through the lens of imaginative reconstruction: myth and history are interwoven in her character and influence. I will explain a post-modern methodology, based largely on the ideas of Keith Jenkins, and will explain why this methodology is important in modern feminist Mariology.
II: Development of Mariology
In order to understand the criticisms against Mariology/certain Mariologies I will provide a background on Mariology's development, focusing on specific ideas of Mary, their impact on women, and criticisms against these ideas. The statements on Mary made at Vatican II will be addressed for their impact on modern Mariology.
III: Representative Modern Authors on Mariology (by this I mean writings from the last 10-15 years)
A: I will look at feminist theory and theology and their intersection. Major feminist themes, especially the emphasis on Mary's "historical person," and authors will be explored. Elizabeth Johnson will be discussed extensively.
B: The influence of Women's Spiritualities, including goddess theories, and the rise of neo-paganism will be discussed. Michael Jordan's book The Historical Mary will be discussed.
IV: Moving Forward
In this concluding section I will look at the pressing themes that need to be addressed within this discipline, such as gender and god-language. I will also present my views on Mary and the need for a symbolic feminist Mariology. is an outline for my thesis, due on Tuesday. Feedback welcome.
