On my way to work (yes, I am at work today!), I saw two guys on the bus. Both looked anywhere between 16-19. Both were little hipsters. Both were quite indie-trendy. But one, were it not for his ipod, looked like 1987 personified. From head to toe:
-faux shag/mullet hair cut
-large thin framed red sunglasses (these do not look good on anyone! ack!)
-new wave t-shirt (couldn't read it from my vantage point)
-super skinny black jeans PEGGED (oh god, why??)
-and the icing on the cake? white KEDS

Holy goodness.

Of course, I have become a dowdy nursing mother, still wearing her "coolest" maternity jeans, wearing ill-fitting bras, in need of a lip and brow wax. Eesh. What little style I had has been killed dead. If only I managed to hang on to my junior high wardrobe, I'd be rockin'.... white Esprit bag, keds, swatch watches, and acid washed jeans anyone?

I thought your no was disbelief. I thoroughly agree with the firm no.

It's more a general no, kind of an all-encompassing no. Like an ostrich-with-its-head-in-the-sand no.

Or perhaps a toddler with her fingers in her ears yelling "NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!" while shaking her head with her eyes closed.

Cuz I'm subtle like that!

OMG we are NOT going back to that style! Remember hyper thermal shirts and scrunch socks? LA Gear and Guess jeans?

Oh, I pulled out a couple decade's snapshots for my sweetie recently. He had never seen versions of me younger than 1995... What a shock.

Passport, 1984, near end of grad school: close-cropped medium brown hair, pinstripe blouse.

CA driver's licence, 1990, after 5 corporate years: A plethora of curls in chin-length permed blonde-highlighted hair, scarf, polkadot blouse. (Think Alice in "Dilbert". I worked with the woman she was modeled on.)

Blue & Gold Fleet tourist photo, 1990: same haircut, reverse-cut baggy acid-washed jeans, baggy jean jacket, baggy everything. I look 50 pounds heavier.

Passport, 1997: incredibly close-cropped hair, still blondish, round face. Reaction of friend: "Who is that, your MOM?" Well, yeah, now that I look at the similarities. [livejournal.com profile] eye_of_zohar begs me to grow my hair out. I leave my corporate job.

CA DL, 2002: Chin-length wavy red hair, goddess-y scarf. Clearly a course correction.

Passport, 2008: Long straight red hair, thinner face, simple top. Expression looks a bit surly because I'm trying not to blink at the flash. Otherwise, not too bad.

... So I'm all about the 21st century. Not too much nostalgia, sartorially speaking.
