Help me out.
I hear the books are more poorly written than Harry Potter (I didn't know that was possible) and more addictive than HP and crack combined. The movie trailer looks fab, but then..... sadly, I've read some commentary.
Moralistic vampire tales written by a Mormon. One kiss? NO SEX?? WTF?! Supposedly the whole thing is about suppressing the animal urges within. And premarital sex is an animal urge. And a sweet girl needs to be saved.... oh it hurts already.
I like premarital sex. Or I did. What's the deal? Would my brain explode in a conniption fit if I went to see this? Books first, then movie? Does it matter?
I want to know what everybody thinks: Mormons, abstainers, Pagans, feminists, Buffy lovers, Buffy haters (hiss!), etc.

Date: 2008-11-22 05:25 pm (UTC)I am torn because it's a movie set here and would normally want to see it but then there are vampires. To me, whether or not they have sex is no biggie, the fact that vampires are involved is the problem.
I'm also bitter bc allegedly the release of the next HP movie was delayed not to compete with it. Dumb.
And I love HP, so there. :-)

Date: 2008-11-22 05:39 pm (UTC)One of the people on my friendslist has done funny summaries of all the books. The upshot is that the vampire love interest is incredibly creepy, the heroine is boring, and the writing is mediocre. And the abstinence only message is pretty in-your-face.
I've heard the movie is pretty bad unless you're already a fan of the books. I'm kind of morbidly curious about it, though.

Date: 2008-11-22 05:47 pm (UTC)BUT one of my besties has and she was SCATHING. She knew the author from her bad bad bad fan-fic and bought the book out of curiosity. It is currently making the rounds around our mutual friends and not a single person has anything better to say than "rofl *headdesk*" (using more words, of course).
Now, sometimes stupidity can be highly entertaining BUT in this case it also comes with numerous and supported allegations of flat-out plagiarism from the author's fellow fan-fic writers and that is NOT COOL.
Oh and I'm definitely from the Buffy/Anne Rice school of vampirism and if they can go out in the sun they just ain't vampires. End of story ;).

Date: 2008-11-22 06:45 pm (UTC)I'm not too concerned with twists on vampire lore, because each author has tweaked it to some degree.
But how awful to be perpetually 17 and no sex before marriage..... I mean, the poor guy is eternally under the age of consent. Some one stake him already!

Date: 2008-11-22 08:14 pm (UTC)Hi there. Allow me to introduce you to Dan Brown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Brown).
I LOVED premarital sex. I loved living with my now-husband before we got married. I loved that when we did get married, it wasn't about, "Oh good, now we're married so we can have TEH SECKS," but more about all of the implications of marriage-- being Mrs. C________, merging our finances, being, as our vows said, "true to each other in good times and in bad."
I haven't read the books myself. I'm sure, giving the large following they have among the immature emo goth girls in my school, as well as the middle-school-aged daughters of my kids' babysitter, that they're about as well-written as the Baby-Sitters Club books. BUT.....the reviews I've read and heard have been mostly positive (while granting the high amount of teenage fluff) and I think that no-sex can be very sexy. Think about movies like The Age of Innocence or Sense and Sensibility.

Date: 2008-11-22 11:42 pm (UTC).... But I will have to read the books and/or watch the film and judge for myself.
Have you read the books or seen the movie? What do you think?
Don't give mormons your money watch these instead
Date: 2008-11-23 01:02 am (UTC)if your your having a need for vampire-ness you should watch the Underworld series with Kate Beckensail.
AND
Movies with Vampire Themes You should watch instead of Twilight:
1.) Underworld 1 and 2 Show down between werewolves and vampires...
2.) Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstien (This one has the whole gambit of Universal Picture monsters.)
3.) Werner Herzog's Nosferatu the Vampire. ( an remake of the 1922 version. You really should watch the original 1922 version THEN watch
4.) Shadow of the Vampire with William Defoe in which he plays the actor Max Schreck (who apparently is a real vampire) when filming the 1922 version.
5.) If you haven't already seen the orignal Buffy Vampire Slayer with Ms. Swanson then watch it...Oh hell watch it again that movie was bad ass!
6.) From Dusk Till Dawn Tarintino/Rodriguez vision of vampires.

Date: 2008-11-23 02:12 am (UTC)I have seen the 1922 Nosferatu, but not Herzog's remake... although somehow I have the soundtrack. Will not watch Tarantino anymore. Nope, won't do it.
Re: Don't give mormons your money watch these instead
Date: 2008-11-23 02:46 am (UTC)okay fine skip the Tarintino , but watch Buffy at least for the Hillary Swank cameo!
"How funky is your chicken? How funky is your chicken? How loose is yer caboose, now shake that caboose." LOVE IT!
Wait, they didn't make Buffy a cheerleader in the series did they?

Date: 2008-11-23 02:16 am (UTC)I liked the books. The writing was okay. I got sucked in by the love story. Because you know, as a girl you want someone to love you like that.
Well, hi there!
Date: 2008-11-23 02:54 am (UTC)I'm totally in the mood to go see the movie. Brainless, beautiful, engrossing... sounds great. If only I didn't feel so crappy. I don't think I'll be leaving the house tonight.
And dood, I could totally go for some amazing, animalistic, headboard banging, insane sex. I can't even remember the last time I had sex like that or even the last time I had sex. Baby is 6 months old... so any day now that sex drive will kick back in, right?
Re: Well, hi there!
Date: 2008-11-23 03:52 am (UTC)I think after my first, I didn't have sex forEVER. This time, it was jump back on the horse and get it over with to get back in the swing of things. Srsly. Just do it! I think my moment of clarity this time, came to me the day I had (and was discharged from the hospital) for my gallbladder surgery when Ben was two months old. If it wasn't for the anesthesia haze, I probably still wouldn't have gone for it. LOL

Date: 2008-11-23 03:00 am (UTC)started reading the first last night and it's horribly written, very simplistic, and yet...all absorbing. i can't wait to read more today!
if they don't have sex i'll be seriously disappointed.
the only reason i care about the movie is because robert pattison is in it. i'm ashamed to admit that he's been my cradle robbing boy crush since he played cedric in an HP movie.

Date: 2008-11-24 01:56 pm (UTC)The writing is low level romance novel at best. Cardboard characters. The heroine is a vapid, helpless, personality-less thing. She's the anti-buffy really.
That said, the book is strangely engrossing. At least until 2/3rds of the way through when it strikes you that NOTHING is happening. They talk about being a vampire for about 10 chapters straight.
I actually don't think JK Rowling is bad writer. Regardles she is a good storyteller. The odd thing about Twilight is that its engrossing, even though nothing happens. No real plot. Unlike say Dan Brown which is breakneck plot.
I'm curious about the movie because I'm always curious about adaptation. I think the screenwriter had their work cut out for them.

Date: 2008-11-24 04:57 pm (UTC)HP: Not great writing, but great story.
So for Twilight, why was it so compelling, do you think? Just vamps in general? I saw the preview for the movie and I thought Pretty! But the girl looked vapid, as did the guy. It's all dark angst. Which.... call me old, but boooooring. I'm only interested in my own angst these days.
